So far I have looked at
Of the Rogues Gallery of heroes for Dead Mans Hand.
Another of the Non Combatant – having looked at the Doc we go religious and examine the Reverend – Reverend Johnson. As a Rogue he is at the Cheaper end only 2 Rep, he does have 5 Hits, but has no weapon and no shooting skill.
So not a surprise the Reverend won’t shoot – but he does have a HtH skill, and two skills Firebrand and Unshakeable Faith.
As I have treated myself to the “official” miniature I also have his special card, which has interested a twist – all the other Rogue special cards I have seen replaced the ACE – the reverends is a replacement 8. that means if you take the Reverend you with lose 1 of your eights in a FULL DECK and your only 8 in a HALF DECK. The Reverends card is actually quite aggressive
- THE PATH OF THE RIGHTEOUS MAN – must be played before any figures are activated on a turn, for the entire turn all 11-14 shooting results also cause a NERVE test. My reading of the card suggests that this effects all shooting for the turn, regardless of side – so it could be a bit of a double edged sword. The card it replaces would have allowed you to change all out of action shooting results, (19+) to one under fire marker and nerve test.
Rev Johnson has 2 special skills.
FIREBRAND – due to the Reverends firebrand preaching (he basically doesn’t shut up) any enemy model activated within 10cm of the Reverend, before they declare their actions, has to pass a NERVE test or lose one of their actions that turn. Note this doesn’t require LINE OF SIGHT – so putting the Reverend somewhere safe (inside a building) would still allow this to work and potentially provide an area of effect causing ENEMYS to lose an action.
UNSHAKEABLE FAITH – Rev Johnson never has to take a NERVE TEST and instead automatically passes them. Also due to his continually Preaching all friendly models within 20cm of him ignore all negative modifiers on their NERVE TESTs – this doesn’t impact BIG NERVE TESTS, which ignore the Reverend when choosing the target Nerve score to test against.
So for 2 REP points you lose a potential Shooter, but gain a big NERVE test bonus the continual chance of causing the Enemy to lose an action, and a card which makes all fire more deadly – that sounds like a powerful combo.
