The Chicago Way: Chicago Police

So whilst we all await the Dead Mans Hand Redux, I thought I’d have a look at The Chicago Way – Great Escapes Game for the 1920/30’s. I have already looked at how the rules differ from Dead Mans Hand, and in this post I look at the first gang – The Chicago Police.

They are introduced in the Chicago way rules as follows.

Crime and the City have grown rapidly over the last few years. The flat foots have struggled to keep their heads above water.

Many have chosen the easy route and turn a blind eye.

Others stand tall and proud against the rising tide of crime doing what they can to enforce the law.

Police – The Chicago way – Great escape games

So there are 5 model types available to the Chicago Police

Captain – leads the Chicago Police gang and must always be present – they are armed with a pistol and nightstick for free.

Sergeant – as always with the no. 2 in a gang you can take upto 1 of them but you dont have to take any if you dont want. The Sergeant comes with a pistol and nightstick for free and can be upgraded with a Pump Action Shotgun.

Officers – each Gang must have at least 2 of these trusty members. As with the other options we’ve seen so far for the police they come with a free pistol and nightstick and can be upgraded to bring a Pump action Shotgun.

Recruit – upto 2 of these can be taken and again they come with a free pistol and nightstick and can be upgraded with a pump action shotgun.

Driver – this is a new type not found in Dead Mans Hand – and a gang can take upto 1 of these – they come armed free with a pistol.

The police introduce a new piece of equipment the Night stick and have 2 gang rules

  • NGHTSTICK – like the sword for the 7th cavalry – models armed with the nightstick get to re-roll their H2H dice in the first round of combat. – Now that is an interesting different phrasing compared to DMH so basically the Police only get to re-roll the H2H dice on the initial combat phase – if the 2 models stay in combat for a second round then the police dont get to re-roll the dice.
  • IF YOU’RE AFRAID OF GETTING A ROTTEN APPLE, DON’T GO TO THE BARREL. GET IT OFF THE TREE – Once per game the Police player may chose a card from his discard pile and swap it with one in his hand.
  • ALWAYS HAPPY TO OBLIGE AN OFFICER OF THE LAW – if a police model is within 10cm of an opponents model when they need to take a nerve test – the opponents model suffers an additional -1 on the nerve roll. This additional -1 does not increase with more officers.

But what are their Ace, King, Queen, Jack cards?

  • ACE – “Here endeth the lesson” – Played before any figure activates – for the rest of the turn the Police get to re-roll any missed shooting the second roll stands.
  • KING – “Its always somebody tipped them; Never the cops are smart” – unsurprisingly from the title this card effects initiative. Once all initiative cards have been revealed the Police play can swap around all of his opponents initiatives.
  • QUEEN – “Well, which are we; gentlemen – policemen, or lost causes?” – must be played before any figure activates and it allows the Police player to move an under fire marker from one of his models to one of his opponents models.
  • JACK – “Every man wears a badge” – another card that is played once all initiative cards have been revealed – this one lets the police player recruit one of the civilian models on the table to be a rookie cop with a pistol for the rest of the game. This is an example of why civilians are important in this game.

The police’s once per game ability to draw a Card from the discard pile into the players hand, will provide the player with the potential to play the same face card twice in a turn. This could be used to play the Jack twice so increasing the gang by 2 recruits for the game.

As with all gangs the police can start a campaign with a vehicle – in their case its a Closed truck – a closed truck allows the gangs driver and 3 passengers to travel in it- also 2 cargo spots can be sacrificed to enable 2 more of the gang to travel in the vehicle. However the extra 2 cannot be targeted for shooting and I assume cannot fire out.

I created this blog as a place to discuss Mental health issues. I chose to include Music ,PC Gaming videos and more recently tabletop gaming as all of these have helped with the management of my Mental Health and I thought people who find the Blog for these may also find the Mental Health resources useful. I am aware that a lot of people with Mental Health concerns are not aware that this is what they have or how to go about getting help, I know I was one of these people for at least 10 years. Therefore if one person is helped by the content on my Blog, if one person discovers the blog and gets a better understanding of Mental Health through the videos I post, then all the work will have been worthwhile. If not.. well I am enjoying making the videos and writing the blog, and doing things I enjoy helps my mental health so call it a self serving therapy.
