So having now finished painting my 50th Birthday present from my wife n daughter the 02 Hundred Hours Bundle. I wondered what types of Bolt Action forces I could create from the figures included in the box, now these are wonderful Wargames Atlantic sculpts and there are quite a few included in the bundle.
So lets do a count – the bundle contains the following sets with miniatures.
- 02 Hundred Hours Starter
- 02 Hundred Hours Guards of Facility 9
- 02 Hundred Hours Operation Torch
- The sleepy Sentry
In the 02 Hundred Hours Starter set you get
- 12 British SAS figures
- 18 German Sentry figures and 6 Guard Dogs
02 Hundred Hours Guards of Facility 9 contains
- 5 Metal Character figures
- 12 more German sentries and 4 guard dogs
02 Hundred Hours Operation Torch contains
- 5 Metal Character figures
- 12 more SAS figures.
So that gives a total of
- 6 Metal German characters
- 30 German sentries
- 10 Guard Dogs
- 5 Metal Allied characters
- 24 SAS/commando figures
When I built these figures I dipped into my bits box and the free Wargame Atlantic Panzer Lehr Sprue that came with Wargames Illustrated, to create the following mix.
Lets start with the Germans
- Unsurprisingly I ended up with 10 Guard dogs – now I chose to mount these on separate bases to maximise the usability of the figures in Bolt Action.
- The 6 metal characters
- 1 scientist – who could be either allied or German
- 1 Commandant with pistol
- 1 Gestapo Officer with pistol
- 1 wounded officer with SMG
- 1 Sleepy Sentry with rifle
- 1 female adjutant with rifle.
- 5 Sentries with gas masks – 2 with SMG and 3 with rifles
- 6 Feldgendarmes (Military Police) – 4 with rifle 2 with SMG
- 18 – German Sentries – 12 with Rifles 5 with SMG 1 with LMG
- 1 officer/nco with pistol
So what type of Bolt Action list can I build from these 36 figures?
If you’d like to see images of the figures check out my earlier posts – 0200 – Grey For Now Games and 0200 – Grey For Now Games – Part 2.
Lets start with an Early War list – based on the 1940 – Battle of France list from the Armies of Germany book –
- The First Lieutenant and staff will be represented by the Sentry Officer and Adjutant
- The Artillery Forward observer and staff will be represented by the wounded officer and Gestapo Officer
- The medic will be the Scientist – closest I could get.
- Squad 1 – is 6 sentries – 1 with SMG, 1 with LMG, 4 with Rifles and the Sleepy Sentry
- Squad 2 – is 5 sentries – 1 with SMG and 4 with Rifles.
- Squad 3 – The 6 man Waffen-SS squad will be built using the Sentries in Gasmasks and 1 Sentry with SMG
- Squad 4 – The 7 man Waffen-SS squad will be built using the Feldgendarmes and 1 Sentry with SMG
- Squad 5 – is 5 Sentries 1 with SMG and 4 with Rifles
- The Captain is the Commandant Figure
This gives me a 739 point list – which could be increased by giving any or all of the squads Anti-Tank grenades.
From the 1 sprue of Panzer Lehr I created
- 1 Lmg team – 1 man with LMG and 1 with Rifle
- 3 with SMG
- 1 Officer with Pistol
These would allow an extra Waffen-ss squad to be added to the list.
This list could be enhanced by adding a couple of vehicles and possibly a piece of artillery, but for a starter list its not bad. One of the clubs I attend is running an escalation league this year which requires 500 pts to begin – this is definately doable with these figures.
Ok lets see what we can get from the Allied figures-
If you’d like to see images of the figures check out my earlier posts – 0200 – Grey For Now Games and 0200 – Grey For Now Games – Part 3.
- Lets start with the 5 characters
- A downed Pilot – possible Air Observer?
- 1 SOE operative with SMG
- 1 Demolitions Expert
- 1 SOE Assassin with Pistol
- 1 Scottish officer with rifle
- 5 French SAS – 1 with LMG, 3 with SMG and 1 with Rifle
- 5 SAS with SMG
- 2 SAS with silenced Carbines – Rifles in Bolt Action
- 1 SAS radio operator with SMG
- 1 Demo Expert with SMG
- 1 SAS Sniper
- 2 SAS with Pistols
- 7 SAS with Rifles
Using the SAS Early Reinforced Platoon (special forces) from the Western Desert book.
- The Scottish officer with rifle and SOE Assassin with Pistol – will be the SAS Captain and Medic
- Squad 1 – will be led by the SOE operative with SMG and will be built with the French SAS team
- Squad 2 – will be led by the SAS Demo Expert with SMG – and filled out with the 3 SAS with SMG.
- Squad 3 – will be led by the SAS radio Operator with SMG – filled out with 3 rifles.
- Squad 4 – will be led by an SAS with pistol and contains the SAS Sniper and has the 2 SAS with Silenced Carbines
- Squad 5 – will be led by the last SAS with Pistol and contains 3 Riflemen.
- Squad 6 – Will be led by the other Demo expert – and filled with 2 SMG’s and 1 Rifle.
This creates a 614 point list
So from the Bundle you can quite happily put together 2 500-600 pts Bolt Action lists – now I know that these are possibly not the most balanced or well thought out lists but the purpose here was to see what I could achieve.
Hope you found this interesting and helpful.
